Drayton-Grimke family papers, 1868-1924.

Papers chiefly consist of the writings of Emma Drayton-Grimke, John Drayton-Grimke, and Augustus Sachtleben, as well as records of the Diocesan Convention of the Diocese of South Carolina. Writings of Emma Drayton-Grimke consist of two typewritten manuscripts (1924) of "Chronicles of Archdale Hall," a history of the Baker family of Archdale Hall Plantation, as well as handwritten manuscript fragments of same. Writings of Augustus Sachtleben (1824-1900) consist of handwritten essays on subjects such as troubadours, minnesingers, and the Roman Circus. A commonplace book (1884) containing poems and literary passages commemorates the death of Augustus Sachtleben, Jr. There are also a few loose items such as copies of poems and a newspaper clipping. Papers of Rev. John Drayton-Grimke (1857-1895) consist of holograph sermons and sermon notes, a bound volume containing clippings of Bible passages with annotations in the margins, and records (ca. 1889-1901) of the Diocesan Conventions of the Diocese of South Carolina. Diocese convention records (mostly handwritten) consist of reports of trustees and committees, constitutions, accounts, lists of clergy and churches, certificates, receipts, petitions, letters, and other items. Also included are printed census forms (11th U.S. census) containing information on the location and value of South Carolina Episcopal churches and the size of their congregations.

ca. 200 items.
